Which Is Better Etsy or Shopify?

When deciding between Etsy and Shopify, the right choice depends on your business needs, goals, and level of control you want over your online store.
Etsy: Best for Beginners and Niche Markets
Etsy is a marketplace specifically for handmade, vintage, and unique products. It’s ideal for beginners because it’s easy to set up, and you benefit from Etsy’s built-in audience of buyers. The platform handles payment processing and has strong SEO features to help your products get discovered. However, Etsy takes a transaction fee (6.5% as of 2024) and offers limited customization options.
Shopify: Best for Growth and Full Control
Shopify, on the other hand, is a fully customizable e-commerce platform. It’s perfect for businesses looking to scale, offering complete control over your store’s design, branding, and customer experience. With Shopify, you’re not limited by a marketplace’s rules, and you can sell anything from physical products to services. However, it requires more setup and maintenance, plus there’s a monthly fee. Shopify also doesn’t bring in built-in traffic like Etsy, so marketing will be up to you and that can get very expensive and challenging.
Which Is Better?
- Choose Etsy if you’re a small seller looking for easy entry into a niche market without heavy investment or technical skills.
- Choose Shopify if you want to build a brand, scale your business, and have complete control over your online store, but you are also willing to invest heavily into marketing.
I used to have both: an Etsy store and a Shopify store. But after my Etsy business had grown a lot, I couldn’t manage both anymore and got rid of my Shopify store. I now use a platform called Kajabi for storytelling and blogging. It makes up for the lack of customization on the Etsy platform. I now feel like I have the best of both worlds.
