An excellent size for simple hand-polishing, pads are tight-bond cellular foam with permanently bonded micro-abrasives. More Info on Cleaning Your Jewelry: It is best and easiest to clean tarnished silver when it first appears. Tarnish on silver will start with a mild color change to a golden hue and this is easily cleaned by washing the jewelry with a very mild detergent. When you wash your silver jewelry be careful to avoid getting the jewelry scratched or dented due to being rubbed or hit against the sink or water tap. To reduce tarnish and keep jewelry tarnish free, it is recommended to store it in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or a plastic zip lock bag. Although sterling silver and gold filled jewelry is scratch resistant it isn't scratch proof, so it is recommended that jewelry be stored individually so that it isn't rubbing up against other articles, like in a loose drawer or jewelry box. Sterling silver and gold filled items are rather soft metals and can be scratched if rubbed too briskly. If a brush is needed, never use anything but a clean and very soft bristle brush, like a babies tooth brush. Paper, polyester, and coarse fabrics often contain wood fibers or synthetics that can cause tiny scratches in the surface of fine jewelry. The natural oils from the skin help minimize the tarnishing, so the more frequently a piece is worn, the less likely it is to tarnish. In more severe cases of silver tarnish, the tarnish changes to a darkish brown and sometimes to a black color. This is a normal process that is caused by oxidization and moisture from air and sunshine. This is when this polishing pad comes in really handy. By rubbing it on the surface of the piece, it will easily remove any tarnish or build up that has happened naturally on your jewelry over time.
